WINDRUSH SCANDAL – RENEWED CALL for a full INDEPENDANT PUBLIC INQUIRY
The Psychotherapy and Counselling Union stands in solidarity with BARAC UK’s call for a Public Inquiry.
The Windrush scandal continues to tear lives apart to this day.
Members of the Windrush Generation and their descendants have been:
- Wrongfully detained and deported
- Exiled from the UK and separated from their families for decades
- Made destitute, losing homes, jobs, and livelihoods
- Stripped of dignity, citizenship, and human rights
The government’s “lessons learned” review in 2020 had no powers, and most of its recommendations have still not been implemented. Compensation has been slow and inadequate: out of 8,800 claims, only 2,600 people have received any payment.
Many have died without justice.
Other scandals – such as Infected Blood and the Post Office – have had full public inquiries. Yet the Windrush scandal, rooted in decades of racist immigration laws, still has not.
As counsellors and psychotherapists, we know the psychological toll of such systemic injustice is profound.
