School Counselling Campaign

OVERVIEW

  • Decline in standing of school counsellors
  • Funding moved to external providers
  • Lower pay than NHS/FE/HE

Whilst previously a professional role in schools with formally recognised pay and conditions, the professional standing of school counsellors has in many ways deteriorated. Although the counselling profession has advocated for more counsellors, the money has often gone to charities and private enterprise for individual counselling of pupils in schools rather than the development of school-based counselling services. Pay and conditions for school counsellors are usually below comparative rates in the NHS, FE, and HE sectors. PCU is campaigning to reverse this.

WHAT WE WANT TO SEE

  • The development of school counselling and psychotherapy as a recognised profession with a critical role in improving the mental health of children and young people 
  • Improved and sustained funding for counselling in schools across all four nations 
  • An industry-wide acceptance of a fair rate of standardised professional pay and conditions for school counsellors

We also have an Education Network, which is is a forum for practitioners with an interest in counselling, training, professional support and supervision in education to come together. We welcome those working in schools, further and higher education, youth and community settings.

  • Counsellors and psychotherapists working in all education sectors
  • Supervisors of practitioners in education
  • Lecturers and tutors of counsellors and psychotherapists in training

 

The Education Network offers opportunities to address challenges and develop professional practice. The more we discuss our work, the more we realise that we can learn from each other in the promotion of high-quality counselling and psychotherapy for students of all ages, the staff who teach them and the carers who support them. In addition, we appreciate the role of supervisors and trainers who are involved in training and education.
