Metanoia Institute Legal Case & Urgent Fundraising Appeal

The Psychotherapy and Counselling Union (PCU) continues to stand in solidarity with the five claimants in the employment tribunal case against the Metanoia Institute.

There is now real urgency.

The claimants face a critical funding deadline of 13 February, and they urgently need to raise more funds to ensure their legal team can continue supporting them through the full tribunal hearing.

Key points from the latest campaign update:

• Thanks to collective solidarity, over £13,400 has been raised so far, helping to fund essential preparation work, including witness statements, legal submissions, and the Dispute Resolution Hearing.

• The total legal costs are £60,000 to take the case through the full employment tribunal hearing, which will span 18 days.

• Significant payments have already had to be made to keep legal support in place.

• The claimants are naming openly the structural imbalance in cases like this: institutions have insurance and legal infrastructure, while individuals carry enormous emotional and financial risk, a burden that is even heavier when racism is at the centre of the case.

• This tribunal is their last available route to have harm recognised, racism taken seriously, and their concerns properly tested in law.

• The claimants are asking for support with honesty and care, whether through donations, sharing the campaign, or standing alongside them in solidarity.

PCU recognises the wider significance of this case for the psychotherapy and counselling profession. It raises questions about racism, accountability, whistleblowing, and the conditions under which educators and practitioners are expected to work. We remain committed to supporting the claimants through this process.

Following the December SPAT OUT event, where over 300 people gathered to hear the claimants’ experiences of institutional racism, PUSH BACK creates space for reflection, response, witnessing, and imagining change. Participants are invited to respond creatively or analytically, anonymously if needed, and to consider what it means to frame the institution itself as the “client”.
