PCU Members to Speak at ‘Re-Booklaunch: Exploring the Dark Edges of Psychotherapy Complaint System’

The Psychotherapy Section of the British Psychological Society (BPS), in collaboration with Karnac Books, will be hosting a full-day event titled Re-Booklaunch: A Discussion to Explore the Dark Edges of the Psychotherapy Complaint System. The event takes inspiration from the 2023 publication The Psychotherapist and the Professional Complaint: The Shadow Side of Therapy.

“The Psychotherapy Section of the British Psychological Society, with Karnac Books, will host a full-day event examining the complexities and challenges of the UK psychotherapy complaint system, inspired by the 2023 book “The Psychotherapist and the Professional Complaint: The Shadow Side of Therapy.”

Editors Adah Sachs and Valerie Sinason, joined by guest speakers from UK psychotherapy registration bodies, unions, and legal fields, will address how the complaint system impacts the profession and why this topic remains often unspoken.

Praised as “iconic” by Professor Brett Kahr, Chair of the Scholars Committee of British Psychoanalytic Council, this book also features contributions from Dr. Phil Cox, the late Chair of the Psychotherapy Section of the British Psychological Society. It commemorates Phil’s influential final work and his commitment to advancing the psychotherapy profession for both practitioners and clients.

Inspired by this work, we look forward to bringing together practitioners, psychoanalytic researchers, legal representatives, and clients. We hope the event will foster open dialogue on one of the most challenging aspects of the psychotherapy profession.”

PCU’s Role in Supporting Our Members

PCU provides support to members who encounter difficulties in their workplaces, during training, or with membership bodies – including when facing complaints. Both BACP and UKCP formally recognise that PCU is entitled to support members during these processes.
